Unit 6: East Asia and the Pacific Rim

In Unit 6, you will study literature from East Asia and the Pacific Rim, which includes such countries as Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, Australia, and New Zealand. As you read, you will learn that the main theme of the literature from this region of the world is the region’s relationship with the West. During this unit, you will compose a literary analysis that explores an author’s purpose in a piece of literature of your choice. Finally, you’ll study the use of italics, quotation marks, hyphens, and semicolons for your grammar review.

(5/20) Unit 6 Lesson 1 Literary Analysis Discussion

For this lesson, you will be asked to complete a discussion. You will first create your OWN "Conversation" response and then respond to TWO classmates with quality responses in order to get full credit.

The discussion question is as follows:

Discuss with your classmates the types of literature you like to read. Provide reasons for each type of literature you list. What about your choices make them worthy to analyze? In your posting, make sure to give at least three stories and three explanations. Remember to give feedback to your classmates and respond to everyone who gives feedback to you.

REMEMBER:

  • You should list 1-3 types of literature you enjoy reading.

  • Answer the question, what about this literature is something you think is worthy of analyzing?

  • Give at least THREE examples of stories you've read with an explanation for each.

(5/30) Unit 6 Lesson 7 Literary Analysis Portfolio Draft

For the Unit 6 portfolio, you will be writing a Literary Analysis.

  • Literary analysis is more than just writing a summary of a fictional literary piece of work. The goal is to give an in depth and insightful interpretation of a piece of literature.

    • You will analyze how a literary element we’ve studied this year has an impact on a story that we’ve read this semester.

  • You have practiced this in the past on test responses by writing about the impact of setting on mood and theme.

    •  REMEMBER: DO NOT SIMPLY SUMMARIZE A STORY.

Step 1: Choose one of the fictional stories or poems that we have read this semester from English 10B for this assignment.

  •  Note: You may not use a story that was not read in English 10B this semester. You may not use any of the nonfiction stories or essays we have read this semester because you won’t be able to analyze it in the same way.

Step 2: Pick 1-3 literary elements that you see present in the story you chose and analyze how they had an impact on the story.  Here are some suggested literary elements:

  • Setting

  • Characters

  • Tone

  • Mood

  • Irony

  • Conflict (internal and external)

  • Symbolism

  • Motivation

  • Imagery

  • Theme

  • Figurative language (simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, etc.)

Before completing the literary analysis, please be sure to read the instructions for this portfolio:
