TYPES OF ASSIGNMENTS

Below are breakdowns of each type of assignment you will work on in this course.

PARTICIPATION

  • There are different ways to earn participation throughout the year:

    • Participation calls (scroll down for more information on this call).

    • Extra Credit opportunities that will come up during the year.

    • Staying in regular contact with your teacher.

  • Participation is worth 5% of your grade.

QUICK CHECKS

  • After each lesson, you will have some type of assessment. Generally, that assessment will be a Quick Check.

  • Quick Checks are short 3-5 question assessments that check your understanding of the lesson you just completed.

  • While they are only worth 5%, you are not able to retake them, so don’t rush through and make sure you try to score well. They have the potential to impact your grade because there are more quick checks than any other assignment.

  • Take notes as you read through your lessons. You may use these notes on the quick check, but you may not use the internet to search for the answers.

DISCUSSIONS

If you are not sure how to submit to the discussion, read this tutorial.

  • You must write at least 5 sentences in response and you must answer each of the questions the Discussion Details ask you to include. Remember that you are a scholar here, so make sure to add at least 2 pieces of evidence from your readings to support your answer.

  • You must respond to two other classmates with thoughtful and appropriate responses (At least 2 sentences).

    • If you need to make a fix for a higher score, make the fix and then webmail your teacher to ask them to review your post.

    • If no other classmates have responded to the post yet, please make your post and check back for posts from classmates so you can fulfill the requirement. If your teacher grades your discussion in that time and take points off, just webmail them to let them know what’s going on.

PORTFOLIO ITEMS AND DRAFTS

  • Each portfolio has a rough draft and a final draft.

  • Your teacher will read your rough draft and write feedback to you. Please read the feedback and make the suggested changes on your final draft (if you need clarification on feedback, please webmail or call your teacher). If you made the changes correctly, you will score well, if the changes have not been made OR if you made a correction that is still not quite there yet, your teacher will send you feedback about that too.

    • If you are following the criteria for the portfolios (read the breakdowns for each portfolio) and if you are making the corrections asked for in the feedback, you should absolutely succeed in this class and with these projects.

QUIZZES

  • Quizzes are very important so please don’t rush them.

  • You are not allowed to use the internet to find answers, HOWEVER, I’m fine if you want to use notes you took while reading the unit on your quiz.

    • In order to be successful with quizzes, you should be taking notes as you progress through your lesson.

TESTS

  • Make sure to download the study guide for the test in advance.

  • Go back over your previous lessons and use those to help you answer the study guide questions.

  • Read the essay questions and you can even write your answers to them in advance. You can also use the text to help you write your essay questions. You are not allowed to use the internet or your study guide on the test, however, you can copy and paste your essay question you’ve already written into the test instead of having to write it on the spot. For 4pt questions you are required to write a minimum of 4 sentences. For 10 pt question you are required to write a minimum of 10 sentences. For 16 pt question you are required to write a minimum of 16 sentences.

PARTICIPATION CALLS

A Participation Call is a call between you and your English teacher where we discuss your understanding of the curriculum so far. Think of it as an informal, verbal quiz. (Do not be intimidated! We are not going to try to trick you.  We are simply going to be asking you about material that you have covered so far in the class.)

In order to complete this call, you first must go to the youcanbook.me page of your teacher and book an available appointment on their calendar. Please indicate that this is a participation call in the description box when making the appointment. Please put this appointment into your planner or set a phone reminder, etc. Please remind your teacher that this is a participation call when we start our appointment.

At the time of the call, please have your computer in front of you and be logged into Connexus in case we ask you to refer to an essay or quiz you have previously taken. Be prepared to chat with your teacher anywhere between 5-15 minutes. If you have any questions about the class or an assignment, have those prepared as well.

Be advised:
**If we have spoken on the phone at all so far this semester, that does not count as a participation call (see the description of a participation call above).
**If you are not available at the time of your appointment, it is YOUR responsibility to book another appointment. It is good etiquette if you are not able to make the appointment to send your teacher a webmail or text letting them know you're going to reschedule, so keep that in mind.
**If, at the time of your call, you are not prepared and are not able to answer your teacher's questions, we can schedule another call. Please be prepared in advance so we can avoid that.
